Making the sail

Since my last post not much was done on the Peapod.  Having the boat in a shed one and a half hour drive from your home complicates things.  Also low temperatures do not help. For painting and gluing I like to have 15 degrees C and that will not happen until spring.  Heating the shed is not a realistic option.

My workshop at home can be somewhat heated so there I will laminate the two knees to strengthen the mid thwart.

This weekend I went to Groningen to make my own sail in a two days workshop at Frank van Zoest of Oar and Sail.  (see www.oarandsail.nl)

Frank is a solo sailmaker specializing in sails for small boats. He also gives one workshop per year in connection with the Bootbouwschool.

I had sent the sailplan of the Peapod 2 months before the workshop and he had the precut cloth ready when I came.

There were also two German guys in the workshop. They had driven 800 km to participate and to make a sail and jib for the Iain Oughtred design they were building. You see them in the picture with Frank in his loft

In the last weeks I did not sit idle because I have made a gardenbench for my youngest daughter who gets a new house at the end of the month.

The bench is a Rietveld design and made out of Larch.

Rietveld is a famous Dutch architect and designer.  You can buy a book with drawings of his furniture designs. It is in both Dutch and English. I tweaked the design a bit to make it a two seater in stead of a three seater and I used 50 mm wood in stead of 32 mm.  Still have to make a small Rietveld side table for the gardenbench.
